======================================================================

X-Files is written in Tcl/Tk and offers e.g. the following:
-----------------------------------------------------------

* An entirely configurable set of up to 96 Actionbuttons, although basic
   file operations can be performed even without any buttons!

* The actionbuttons can also be configured to launch different
   applications making X-Files a nice front-end.

* Two fast mouse button binded operations can be associated for each
   file type.
   These are examples, configure your own combinations:
   E.g. textfiles: left MB -> your favourite viewer
                  middle MB -> editing with your favourite editor

* Easy configuration of the previous items with built-in editors

* Editor also for X-Files resources

* Transparent access to tar- and zip-packages. Basic file operations are
   supported both to and from a package. Also compressed tar is supported.

* Easy installation with our own installation script, or available as RedHat rpm-package.

* Moving within the directory hierarchy is flexible, fast and very visual.

* A pop-up menu for a quick use of the basic file operations and also
   for other operations of your own choice

* Directory history of the last six directories accessed

* Safe delete with one-step undo

* A few well thought and tested shortcut keys

*  Context sensitive pop-up help

* Pattern select, cool looks and much more...

New features:
=========================================================================
12.04.1997 Version 1.30

* No more beta!

* Visual enhancements: Equal sized buttons and new color scheme.
  Also a redesigned buttonset.

* New extensions file.

* X-Files installer now makes a copy of your old configuration files,
  if you choose to overwrite them in install.

* X-Files now fully supports names and paths with whitespaces!
  As a result of this, the event that sets the focus to the path-entry
  is changed to Escape-key.
  As a "side effect" of this, all other special characters work as well. You
  only have to be careful with the backslash ('\').

* Extensions can now be longer (eg. tar.gz or real.long.extension.for.my.app)
  The longest match is used (matching is now case sensitive).

* X-Files is also availavable as rpm (for RedHat Linuxers... :)

* X-Files -code is split into pieces, thus speeding up the startup.

* You can set the initial geometry and size in the resources and change
  the size later on!!!

* You can set the number (1-6) of button columns and the spacing (0-n)
  between buttons in the resources.

* In Help-mode right click on a button shows the command it executes.

* [VirtualTar] now supports also compressed archives and works in DEC Alphas.

* You can use [PatternSelect] in Virtual Filesystem.

* The directory listings can be sorted by the extension. In this, only
  the last extension counts. Works also in Virtual Filesystem.

* Message logging to log-windows and/or -files.

* File handling with dos-partitions and links has been improved,
  no more errors.

* You can copy the path from the directory entry to global clipboard by
  triple clicking the entry!

* Virtual Filesystem no longer disables the ActionButtons on that side
  thus allowing their usage with right mousebutton.

* Enhancements and bug-fixes in Output Window and its FileSelector, Resource
  Editor and Button Editor.

* Now the file names are truncated if they do not fit in the listbox allowing
  the sizes to be always visible.

* Auto updating has improved, now checks also the selections. Also keeps up
  with changes made by other programs.

* The forced update (directory entry + RMB) now refreshes the view AND keeps
  the selections.

* The listboxes in Extension Editor now work as they should always have worked.

What you need to get X-Files working:
-------------------------------------

- Unix/X-Window environment. The development has been made on Linux and
   thus Linux is the only platform that supports all the features. X-Files
   has been tested also on Silicon Graphics Indy, HP 700 workstation and
   Digital Alpha workstation.

- X-Files is entirely written in Tcl/Tk and requires the versions
   7.4/4.0 or higher. No extensions have been used so none are needed.
   No compiling, ready to run.

- X-Files supports a 3-button mouse which is therefor recommended. The
   program works with 2-button mouses but without the 3-button emulation
   you will not get everything out of the X-Files.

======================================================================

In the future we have planned:
------------------------------

- Transparent FTP (Now under construction!!)

-  Asynchronous file operations.

- Support for X-Files on Windows and MacOS.

-  Header editor
    (If you do not have an extension defined for some file, X-Files
     searches the file header to determine the type)
    E.g. all gifs have the string GIF8 in their header etc.)

-  Hotkey manager

- Extended listboxes (different colors/fonts/styles for different types)
